Indian wedding budget in lakhs: what ₹10, 20, 30 and 50 lakh cover
Short answer: in most Indian wedding budgets, venue and catering take about 45%, decor about 11%, photos and video 8%, outfits 8%, and a buffer of 8% saves you when a quote goes up. The number that decides whether a budget works is what it leaves per plate once you count every function.
How each budget splits
The same split as our wedding budget calculator, applied to four common budgets. Jewellery is left out: many families use gold they already have.

What each budget leaves per plate
This is where most plans go wrong. A typical North Indian wedding with roka, sagai, haldi, mehendi, sangeet, the wedding and a reception serves about 3.1 "full meals" per guest invited to the biggest function (smaller functions have fewer guests and lighter food). With venue + food at 45% of a mid-range budget, here is what each budget leaves per plate for venue and food together:
| Budget | 200 | 300 | 500 |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹10 L | ₹720 | ₹480 | ₹290 |
| ₹20 L | ₹1,440 | ₹960 | ₹580 |
| ₹30 L | ₹2,160 | ₹1,440 | ₹860 |
| ₹50 L | ₹3,600 | ₹2,400 | ₹1,440 |
Compare with typical venue + food rates per plate, veg, before GST: metro ₹1,100 / ₹1,700 / ₹3,500, tier-2 city ₹750 / ₹1,100 / ₹2,000, smaller town ₹500 / ₹750 / ₹1,200 (simple / mid / premium). GST and service charge often add 15-25%, and non-veg adds about ₹200-800 a plate.
Example: ₹20 lakh for 300 guests across seven functions leaves about ₹960 a plate for venue and food. That covers a simple plate in a tier-2 city. It is a little short of a mid-range plate in a tier-2 city (₹1,100) and is well below a mid-range plate in a metro (₹1,700).
Seven ways to bring the number down without it looking cheap
- Count guests per function, not once. The haldi and mehendi rarely need the full list. Inviting 60 people instead of 150 to the mehendi saves more than any decor cut.
- Merge two evenings. A combined mehendi-sangeet removes one venue, one decor setup, one DJ and one dinner.
- Hold the small functions at home or in a community hall, with a caterer instead of a banquet package.
- Lunch instead of dinner for one function: lighter menus and lower venue rates.
- Pick an off-peak muhurat or a weekday. Venues and decorators price the peak dates highest; ask for the rate on two or three dates.
- Agree the plate count in writing. Caterers usually bill a minimum guarantee even if fewer guests come; book for your realistic number, not the hopeful one.
- Keep the buffer. Last-minute additions (extra rooms, more flowers, one more band hour) are normal. A 8% buffer turns them from a crisis into a choice.
Where the averages come from
WedMeGood's 2025-26 report puts the average Indian wedding at about ₹39.5 lakh (₹58 lakh for destination weddings), and WeddingWire India's 2024-25 survey at ₹29.6 lakh with about 330 guests. Both survey couples who plan through wedding portals, so they lean towards bigger weddings. Your plan is what matters: try your own numbers.
